You spray your favourite perfume in the morning, step out into the Pakistani sun, and by lunchtime it has disappeared. Sound familiar? Heat, humidity and dry skin can make even a good fragrance fade fast.
The good news: a few small habits can make your perfume or attar last much longer. Here are the tips that work best in our weather.
1. Apply on Clean, Moisturised Skin
Fragrance holds on to moisture. On dry skin it evaporates quickly; on soft, moisturised skin it stays for hours.
- Apply right after a shower, when your skin is clean and slightly warm.
- Rub a little unscented lotion or a thin layer of petroleum jelly on the spot first, then apply your perfume on top.
- Avoid strongly scented lotions — they will fight with your fragrance.
2. Choose the Right Spots
Apply where your body is warm, because warmth slowly releases the scent through the day:
- Sides of the neck and behind the ears
- Inner wrists and inner elbows
- Chest, just below the collarbone
Spray from about 15–20 cm away, so the fragrance spreads evenly instead of landing in one wet spot.
3. Don’t Rub Your Wrists Together
It is a very common habit — and one of the quickest ways to weaken a perfume. Rubbing creates heat and friction that break down the lighter top notes, so the scent fades faster and smells flatter. Just spray, or dab, and let it dry on its own.
4. Spray a Little on Your Clothes
Fabric holds fragrance longer than skin, especially in the heat. A light spray on your collar, scarf or dupatta can keep the scent with you all day.
Tip: test on a hidden spot first, and avoid silk or light-coloured fabric. Attars are oil-based, so apply them on skin rather than clothes, as oil can leave marks.
5. Pick a Long-Lasting Fragrance Type
Not every fragrance is made to last all day. If longevity matters to you, choose:

Scents with rich base notes — oud, musk, amber, sandalwood and vanilla — also last longer than light citrus or fresh scents, which fade first in the heat.
6. Layer Your Scent
Layering means using two products that work together. For example, apply a drop of attar on your wrists and neck, then a light spray of a perfume with similar notes on top. The oil anchors the spray and helps it last.
7. Store Your Bottles Properly
Heat and sunlight slowly damage fragrance — and in Pakistan’s summer, that happens faster than you think.
- Keep bottles in a cool, dark drawer or cupboard.
- Never leave perfume in the car — a parked car in summer gets hot enough to spoil it.
- Avoid the bathroom, where heat and steam change the scent over time.
- Always close the cap tightly.
8. Carry a Small Bottle for Touch-Ups
On long days, weddings or travel, keep a small bottle in your bag and refresh once in the afternoon. A 5 ml attar is perfect for this — tiny, spill-safe and easy to carry.
9. Don’t Trust Your Nose Alone
After an hour or two, your nose gets used to your own fragrance and stops noticing it. This is called nose blindness. Your perfume is often still there — the people around you can smell it even when you can’t. So before you spray again, ask someone close to you.
